Massage Equipment List: Our UK Picks for Therapists
4 November 202616 min readProvider GuideMassage Equipment
Key takeaways
A working massage therapist needs a table with a face cradle, a bolster, at least three sets of washable linen, couch roll, a bottle warmer for the massage medium, surface disinfectant and a lamp that dims.
The lightest portable table in this list, the Affinity Versalite, weighs 11.5 kg; a stationary electric or hydraulic couch lets you change height between clients. Check the working load, height range and breathing hole before you buy.
Dreamland and Beurer limit their electric underblankets to home use, so a massage couch is better warmed with a pad made for treatment tables, a fleece layer or warm towels.
PPL PRS says a business with customers or visitors on the premises will usually need TheMusicLicence; its no-charge policy for people working alone at home applies only when no visitors or customers hear the music.
Every product in this list was on sale in the UK from at least two sources when we checked in November 2026, and no brand paid to be included.
A massage equipment list for a UK therapist who is just starting out fits on one page: a table with a face cradle, a bolster or two, three or more sets of washable linen, couch roll, a bottle warmer for your oil, disinfectant wipes, hand gel and a lamp you can dim. Hot stones, towel cabinets and percussion massagers come later, once you know what your clients actually book. The oils themselves have their own page — our guide to massage oils covers carrier oils and blends — so this one sticks to the kit around them.
Below we go group by group: five picks where Britain has five good options, fewer where it doesn’t. They are our picks, not a ranking, and every one was checked at UK shops in November 2026.
The Short Massage Equipment List: What You Need First
Looking for a therapist?
Browse verified massage therapists across the UK — incall & outcall, all services.
If the budget only stretches to the essentials, this is the order we would buy in:
A massage table (the UK trade usually says couch) with a face cradle or face pillow — portable if you do outcall, stationary if you have a room.
One or two bolsters for under the knees face up and under the ankles face down.
At least three sets of linen: fitted cover, a sheet or large towel to drape, a face-cradle cover and hand towels. One on the table, one in the wash, one ready.
Couch roll and a holder for a disposable layer you change between clients.
Your massage medium and a bottle warmer. Cold oil on a warm back loses a client’s attention fast.
Surface disinfectant wipes, hand sanitiser and nitrile gloves.
A lamp that dims and a small speaker. A ceiling light glares straight into the eyes of a client lying face up.
Some styles bring their own kit. Nuru needs its seaweed gel and a waterproof mat rather than oil on a couch — see our nuru massage guide. Thai work happens fully clothed on a floor mat (Thai massage techniques explains why), and a milking table is a specialist piece of furniture covered in our milking table explainer. All of it is a running cost of the business, so build it into what you charge.
Check the plug before you pay. Some table and oil warmers on UK marketplaces are North American models shipped from abroad. Look for a UK plug, UKCA or CE marking and a UK seller in the listing.
Portable or Stationary Massage Table?
Decide how you will work first. Outcall to hotels and homes needs a table that folds into a case and goes up a staircase without help. Working from one room — a spare bedroom in Bristol, a rented room above a salon — suits a stationary couch that never wobbles and changes height at the touch of a pedal or switch. Our incall vs outcall guide covers what clients expect from each.
Then compare four numbers: weight; width (63–71 cm is typical, and wider is comfier for the client but harder on a shorter therapist’s back); height range against your own height; and the safe working load, which has to cover the client plus the pressure you add. Check whether the face cradle and breathing hole are included. Where shops disagree on a spec, we quote the maker or its main UK distributor.
Our Portable Massage Table Picks
Affinity Versalite — the lightest here at 11.5 kg (63 cm width): aluminium frame, 62–82.5 cm high, 205 kg working weight, carry case included, face cradle extra. Sold by Avalon Couches, Massage Warehouse, Natural Living and Firstaid4sport. Why: easy to carry up a hotel staircase.
Affinity Marlin — aluminium, 14.5 kg (25-inch width), 58–81 cm high, 230 kg impact working weight, carry case and breathe hole included, two-year warranty. Sold by Avalon Couches, Massage Warehouse and Natural Living. Why: more working weight than the Versalite for three more kilos.
Affinity Comfortflex — beech frame with a lifting backrest, face cradle, arm sling and wheeled case; 17.5 kg, 66–81 cm high, 205 kg working weight. Sold by Avalon Couches, Massage Warehouse, Ellisons and Natural Living. Why: clients can sit semi-upright for scalp or face work, and the wheels spare your shoulder.
Master Massage Coronado — wooden table with beech legs, 7.6 cm of foam, 61–86 cm high, 340 kg working capacity; face cradle, face pillow, arm shelf and carry case in the package. Sold by Natural Living (71 cm wide) and Amazon UK (76 cm). Why: everything in one box.
Earthlite Spirit — premium wooden table, 15.4–16.8 kg depending on width (71, 76 or 81 cm), 58–84 cm high, rated to about 360 kg (800 lb), with the Flex-Rest face cradle in the UK package. Sold by Natural Living and Ellisons, often made to order. Why: the highest load rating here and a lifetime limited warranty, if you can wait for stock.
Our Stationary Massage Table Picks
Plinth Medical PRO3 — made in Suffolk, hydraulic or electric, about 50–99 cm high, 71 cm wide, 250 kg safe working load, breathing hole included; lifetime guarantee on the frame, five years on components. Sold by Plinth Medical and Natural Living. Why: Plinth made it 8 cm wider than its medical couches.
SEERS Sterling 2 Section — electric couch from a Suffolk maker, 46–99 cm by hand switch, 63 cm wide, 200 kg safe working load, gas-assisted backrest, built to order. Sold by SEERS, Physique and Natural Living. Why: electric height from a British maker. Order the optional breathing hole if you work face-down.
REM Excel Standard Electric — two-section electric beauty bed made in the UK, 59–86 cm high, 70 × 189 cm, face hole with infill, locking wheels, 175 kg maximum. Sold by Ellisons, Natural Living and Aston & Fincher. Why: a wide top on wheels for a room that also does beauty work.
Avalon MultiFlex 2 — two motors, for height and backrest, about 45–99 cm, 175 kg recommended load, three-year warranty on the electrics, made in the UK. Sold by Avalon Couches and Natural Living. Why: you can raise the backrest without leaving the client’s side. The face hole is an extra.
Affinity Classic — hardwood static couch with a lifting backrest, 58–91 cm, 71 cm wide, 273 kg working weight, face cradle and arm rest included. Sold by Avalon Couches, Massage Warehouse and Natural Living. Why: a solid wooden couch with nothing to plug in, for a room where only you work.
Face Cradles, Bolsters and Couch Roll Holders
The face cradle is where cheap tables give themselves away: a thin pillow presses on the cheekbones and the client spends the hour shifting. A crescent pillow with a deep cut-out keeps weight off the eyes. Before you buy a separate frame, measure the gap between the rods on your table, because fittings differ.
Master Massage Universal Face Pillow — crescent cushion in 8.9 cm moulded foam, with a larger cut-out around the eyes and an oil- and water-resistant cover. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: thick, and it wipes clean between clients.
Master Massage ED-Deluxe Face Cradle — universal frame for a table’s face-cradle holes; turns through 180° and adjusts through about 15 cm. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: a replacement frame for a table that came without one.
Master Massage 3/4 Round Bolster (15 cm) — 66 cm long, flat on one side so it doesn’t roll, zipped wipe-clean cover, strap handle. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: stays put on a narrow portable top.
Affinity Paper Towel Holder — fits the table end through the face-cradle ports and takes 20-inch couch rolls. Sold by Avalon Couches and Natural Living. Why: keeps the roll off the floor and within reach.
We stopped at four. Other bolsters, fleece pads and face covers we liked are each sold by one shop only — mostly Physique’s and Massage Warehouse’s own ranges — so they appear in the shop guide below.
Keeping Clients Warm: Table, Oil and Towel Warmers
Table Warmers
This is the one group where we could not find five honest picks. The best-known table warmers come from American brands, are certified to North American safety standards and mostly reach the UK as imports. The two UK-plug pads that British suppliers list — Physique’s Deluxe Electric Warmer Pad and the Affinity Thermo Electric Blanket at Ellisons — were both out of stock when we checked in November 2026.
And the electric blanket from your own bed? Dreamland’s manual limits its underblanket to home use on a bed and calls any other use dangerous; Beurer’s says its TS 15 is for domestic use, not commercial use. A paid treatment is commercial use. If you buy a pad made for massage couches, look for a UK plug and UKCA or CE marking, a timer or automatic switch-off, and straps that hold it flat; keep a sheet between pad and client (Physique’s own instruction) and switch it off when the couch is empty. Often the cheaper fix is the room itself: warm it well before the client arrives, add a fleece pad under the cover, and keep a warm towel ready.
Oil and Towel Warmers
Most bottle warmers sold in the UK are shops’ own labels, and only one passed our two-seller rule. Towel cabinets come from the salon trade. Test a hot towel on your inner wrist before it touches a client.
Master Massage Single Bottle Oil Warmer — holds one 250 ml bottle at about 60 °C with a thermostat; Natural Living lists it with a UK plug. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: one bottle is all most solo therapists use in a session.
Crewe Orlando Towel Warmer — UV cabinet with automatic thermo-control, a sealed magnetic door and a drip tray; the small model holds about 24 towels. Sold by Ellisons and Salon Services. Why: small enough for a shelf beside the couch.
SkinMate Hot Towel Cabinet (18 L) — 250 W, 70–80 °C, UV lamp, two shelves and a condensation tray, for roughly 24–36 face towels. Sold by Ellisons and Natural Living. Why: room for a full day of towels.
Taiji Hot Cabi — from the Japanese maker that launched the Hot Cabi in 1964; the 8-litre HC-8 has two settings (60–70 °C and 70–80 °C), runs on 140 W and has a UK plug. Sold by Ellisons and SushiSushi. Why: a lower setting for clients who find hot towels too much.
Hot Stones, Hand Tools and Massagers
Buy tools for techniques you are trained in, and check that your insurance covers them before they touch a client. We describe what each product is; the health claims on the boxes we leave to the makers.
Hot Stone Heaters and Stone Sets
Master Massage Digital Hot Stone Heater (6 Quart) — stainless water-bath heater with a display of current and set temperature, up to 70 °C, UK plug; an 18-quart version is also sold. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: plain, digital and British-plugged.
Caldera Hot Stone Heater — 6 litres, a 30–90 °C thermostat, a detachable base so the pot can go to the couch, and a silicone insert that quietens the stones. Sold by Massage Warehouse and Natural Living. Why: a premium heater for a fixed room. It is an Italian import with an EU plug; Natural Living supplies a 3-pin adaptor.
VULSINI Hot Stone Massage Heating Bag — waterless dry-heat bag, designed in the UK, that runs from the mains or a car socket, with a digital controller and safety timer. Sold by VULSINI and Massage Warehouse. Why: no water to carry or spill on outcall. Choose the 220 V version.
VULSINI Standard Hot Stone Massage Kit (45 pieces) — basalt: 6 large, 8 medium, 8 small, 8 face and 8 toe stones, plus 7 chakra stones; 12-month warranty. Sold by VULSINI and Massage Warehouse. Why: a full-body set with face and toe stones included.
Master Massage Deluxe Hot Stone Set (60 pieces) — basalt stones including facial and toe stones, 4 white marble stones and 7 chakra stones. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: marble stones included for cold work.
Hand Tools and Percussion Massagers
Therabody Theragun PRO Plus — 5 speeds, 5 attachments plus heat and vibration heads, an LCD screen; the Theragun Prime (6th generation) is the simpler, cheaper sibling. Sold by John Lewis, Argos and Amazon UK. Why: sold by mainstream UK retailers, not only through marketplaces.
RockTape RockPods — 8 silicone cups (four 57 mm, four 67 mm) in a case. Sold by Physique and Amazon UK. Why: silicone, with no pump to clean. Physique notes they are for static cupping, not gliding along the skin.
RockTape RockBlades — stainless steel soft-tissue tools with soft elastomer edges, the clinic relative of gua sha (the technique is called IASTM). Sold by Physique and Amazon UK. Why: built for clinic use — take a course first.
VULSINI 12-Piece Bamboo Massage Stick Set — steam-pressed solid bamboo in long, medium, short and tapotement sizes, with towels and bands. Sold by VULSINI and Massage Warehouse. Why: a full warm-bamboo set from a UK brand that also sells a heating bag for the sticks.
TriggerPoint GRID 1.0 and MB1 — a 33 cm hollow-core foam roller rated to 226 kg and a firm foam ball. Sold by Physique and Amazon UK. Why: aftercare tools to show clients, and good for your own shoulders after a long day.
For a body gua sha, the London brand Hayo’u sells a copper one from its own shop; we left it out of the five only because we found no second UK seller.
Towels, Couch Covers and Couch Roll
Linen is a cost that never stops, because oil works its way into cotton and every client needs a fresh set. A practical system has three layers: a fitted cover that stays on the couch, couch roll or a sheet that changes with every client, and towels for draping. Darker colours hide oil marks longer; whites can take a hotter wash. The care label decides how hot you can go, and some covers stop at 40 °C.
Aztex Classic Massage Couch Cover — elasticated 80/20 cotton-polyester fitted cover, with or without a face hole; the maker says it fits couches 55–72 cm wide and 170–190 cm long. Sold by Duncan Stewart 1978, Salon Services and Amazon UK. Why: easy to replace, in several colours.
Master Massage Fitted Flannel Sheet Set (3 pieces) — pre-shrunk 100% cotton flannel: fitted sheet, flat sheet and face-cradle cover. Sold by Natural Living and Amazon UK. Why: warm on a winter evening, with the face cover included.
BC SoftWear Comfy Towels (450 gsm) — 100% cotton, from face cloths to 100 × 170 cm bath sheets; the maker says whites wash at up to 90 °C, colours at 40 °C (60 °C at most). Sold by BC SoftWear and Ellisons. Why: whites that take a hot wash, from a UK spa-linen supplier.
Aztex Salon Towels (pack of 10) — 400 gsm cotton terry, 50 × 85 cm, washable at up to 40 °C. Sold by Duncan Stewart 1978 and Amazon UK. Why: a ten-pack covers a day of hand and foot towels.
Tork Couch Roll C1 Advanced (2-ply) — 50 cm perforated couch roll, about 54 m per roll. Sold by Physique and Amazon UK. Why: fits standard 20-inch holders.
Hygiene Between Clients
Between clients, wipe everything a body or a hand touched: the couch under the linen, the face cradle, bolsters, the oil bottle and the door handle. Fresh linen for every client is the minimum. If your borough licenses massage premises (most London boroughs do), read the licence conditions — they may set hygiene rules of their own. Below we quote only what each maker says its product does.
Clinell Universal Wipes — GAMA Healthcare’s one-step detergent and disinfectant wipe for surfaces and non-invasive medical devices; GAMA lists tests including EN 14476 (viruses) and EN 13727 (bacteria). Sold by Physique and Amazon UK. Why: cleans and disinfects in one wipe.
Schülke mikrozid universal wipes — low-alcohol cleaning and disinfecting wipes, 20 × 20 cm; the maker’s data says they act on bacteria and enveloped viruses from 15 seconds. Sold by Kent Express and Amazon UK. Why: short stated contact times.
Clinell Hand Sanitising Gel — 74% alcohol gel with glycerine and aloe vera, in a 500 ml pump or 50 ml clip bottle. Sold by Physique and Amazon UK. Why: the clip bottle hangs on an outcall bag.
Dettol Antibacterial Laundry Cleanser — goes in the fabric-softener drawer; Dettol says it works in washes as cool as 20 °C. Sold by Dettol, UK supermarkets and Amazon UK. Why: for covers and coloured towels whose labels stop at 40 °C.
Unigloves Pearl nitrile gloves (Black Pearl or Blue Pearl) — powder-free, latex-free nitrile examination gloves. Sold by Unigloves, Physique and Amazon UK. Why: for cleaning, for used linen, and for any client who asks.
Light, Scent and Music for Your Room
Light a massage room from low down and to one side, never from a bright ceiling light above a face-up client. Real candles near oil and cotton are a fire risk, which is why LED ones make sense. Ask before you scent the room: some clients dislike fragrance. A softly lit, tidy room also photographs well, and your photos sell the session before anyone books — see how to build a profile that gets enquiries, or browse therapist listings in London to see how others present their rooms.
Philips Hue White Ambiance bulbs — dimmable smart bulbs, warm to cool white, in E27, B22 and GU10 fittings, controlled from your phone over Bluetooth. Sold by John Lewis and Amazon UK. Why: dims a home studio without rewiring.
Philips Hue Go — rechargeable portable light; John Lewis lists up to 18 hours per charge depending on settings. Sold by John Lewis and Amazon UK. Why: soft light in a hotel room on outcall.
Luminara moving-flame LED pillar candle — real-wax pillar with a moving LED flame, battery powered. Sold by John Lewis and Amazon UK. Why: the candle look with nothing burning near oil or linen.
NEOM Wellbeing Pod Mini+ — waterless, rechargeable diffuser that screws onto a 10 ml bottle of essential-oil blend; NEOM says up to 125 hours per charge. Sold by NEOM, John Lewis and Amazon UK. Why: no water and no cable, so it travels.
Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) — portable Bluetooth speaker, up to 12 hours of playback, IP67, 0.59 kg. Sold by Bose UK, John Lewis and Amazon UK. Why: fits the outcall bag and fills one room at low volume.
Music needs a licence more often than therapists expect. PPL PRS says a business with customers or visitors on the premises will usually need TheMusicLicence; its no-charge policy covers homeworkers working alone only when no visitors or customers hear the music. So if clients come to your flat and the speaker is on, the licence usually applies. Royalty-free music may not need it, but get the supplier’s confirmation in writing. Outcalls aren’t covered on that page, so ask PPL PRS, and check that your streaming service allows business use.
Where UK Therapists Buy Massage Equipment
Natural Living — the broadest multi-brand specialist we found: Affinity, Master Massage, Earthlite, SEERS, Plinth Medical, REM, Avalon, Aztex and towel cabinets.
Massage Warehouse — a UK online retailer trading since 1999. Much of its range is its own labels (Porta-Lite, Earthworks, BodyPro), well reviewed but sold only there, plus Affinity, Caldera and VULSINI.
Physique — a sports-healthcare supplier since 1998: its own couches, bolsters and covers, plus SEERS, RockTape, TriggerPoint, Clinell and Tork.
Avalon Couches — makes the MultiFlex electric tables and stocks the Affinity range.
Ellisons and Salon Services — salon wholesalers for REM beds, Affinity, Earthlite, towel cabinets and Aztex covers. Salon Services and Sally Beauty are one company.
Amazon UK — handy for Master Massage, Aztex and consumables, but check who the seller is and whether the plug is British.
How We Chose These Picks
We checked every product on 4 and 5 November 2026. To make the list, a product had to be on sale in the UK from at least two sources — the maker’s own UK shop or UK retailers — and come from an established brand, not an unbranded marketplace listing. Specs come from the maker or its main UK distributor. We left out prices and review counts because they change often; stock comes and goes too, so check with the seller before you order. No brand paid to appear in this list.
Massage Equipment: Quick Answers
What equipment do I need to start as a massage therapist?
A massage table with a face cradle, one or two bolsters, at least three sets of washable linen, couch roll, your massage medium and a bottle warmer, surface disinfectant, hand sanitiser and a dimmable lamp. Hot stones, towel cabinets and percussion massagers can wait.
Is a massage table the same as a massage couch or massage bed?
Yes, all three mean the padded surface the client lies on. “Couch” is the usual UK trade word, US brands say “table”, and beauty salons often say “bed”.
Should my first massage table be portable or stationary?
Portable if you will do any outcall or share a room; stationary if you have your own room and work from it most days. A portable table can work in a fixed room too, but a stationary couch never leaves it.
Can I use a normal electric blanket on a massage couch?
Better not. Dreamland and Beurer both limit their electric underblankets to home use, and a paid treatment is commercial use. Use a warmer made for treatment couches, with a UK plug and a timer, or warm the room and use warm towels.
Do I need a music licence to play music during a massage?
Usually, if clients hear it on your premises. PPL PRS says businesses with customers or visitors will usually need TheMusicLicence; its no-charge policy for people working alone at home applies only when no visitors or customers hear the music.
Where can I buy massage equipment in the UK?
Natural Living, Massage Warehouse, Physique and Avalon Couches carry tables and accessories; salon wholesalers such as Ellisons and Salon Services carry towel cabinets, beauty beds and covers; John Lewis and Argos sell percussion massagers. On Amazon UK, check the seller and the plug.
